Twitter Storytelling

I wrote my storytelling Twitter thread about the top 7 most random, weirdest, and in some cases grossest things I have in my home. It was inspired a material culture challenge where people go through some of their possessions and without giving the context of what it is, other people must guess what the item is and what it is used for. The professor in this material culture class had collected many things and you can imagine almost no one could guess what the objects were. This class exercise taught me a lot about why material culture is important and the key role this discipline plays in different cultures and societie’s.

After searching through my house with a motive to find what I would perceive as the strangest things, I manage to gather 7 items that I felt made the list. I hope this story was interesting, fun and engaging. I tried to add a little suspense and sense of danger knowing that one item in particular probably should have been red flagged at the Canadian border, but at the time for all I knew it was a typical souvenir.

My twitter thread began with the #7 item and counted up to #1 to once again add a sense of anticipation and excitement. Although most of the time I would skip to the #1 thing as I do not like being in suspense. Fun Fact: I can never sit through a movie without reading the plot summary prior and I will never watch scary movies.

I begin with a nostalgic childhood possession that created an entire collection of rocks and shells collected from every place I’ve explored.

Then I thought the gift my friend brought me from Portugal was interesting given that I don’t even know what is specifically in it. For some reason because it’s says 2020 on it and was given to me a day before the quarantine lock down. I have some crazy belief that if I open it, I will literally and metaphorically open up a can of worms and I just can’t deal with that.

I also own this finger stretching device that is supposed to enhance your grip strength. If you know me you know that I pretty much abbreviate every word I possibly can, so I usually call it the fingy stresser

My thrifted Mexican souvenir I can’t even describe my thought process when I think about how it was constructed. In my mind, it was 100% carved from a chunk of wood and I can’t wrap my brain around how they carved the different rings without them falling off like beads on a string.

The next item I do admit that I was hesitant about sharing just because of the dead silk moth that attempted to break free, and quite honestly might have suffocated. I feel bad for the little guy but it was for the best. I did not want to be responsible for a full on invasive silk moth takeover that could of killed all Canada’s native bugs and ate entire crops of grain, what a nightmare that would be.

The second top item I think to this day is super random but it is cool. To think that’s how the locals got their daily undercover news and gossip back in the day, its clever. It does actually still work but with the advancement of technology I can only pick up on local truck driver lingo that I can’t even translate.

And finally, the top item that made the #1 spot. The Cow Ball. It is truly one of a kind, and remarkable that I even found this in over 100 acres of pasture land. I picked it up thinking it was a rock (blame my crazy rock obsession for noticing it) only to discover it was a super compact ball of cow hair when my dad threw it against the ground.

Please share the strangest thing you have in your home. I hope you enjoyed my twitter story.

Groceries & Gossip

2020: The Year of Boredom

When the pandemic first began in March, a lot of us took up new hobbies, binge watched everything worth watching on Netflix, and purged our closets. There were even check-lists coming out with “What to Do in Isolation

However, as weeks turned into months and fall greeted us… Boredom set in quickly. The excitement of learning how to bake, sculpt clay, and colour coordinate a closet has faded. Here I have compiled a short list of the things that I currently find entertaining:

  • Going to work
  • Dr’s office visits
  • Buying new socks
  • Looking at photos of me having fun
  • Sorting my PJ drawer
  • My drive to work
  • Watching my dog sleep
  • Watching my cat sleep
  • And, you guessed it! Sleeping.

“Find Joy in The Little Things”

One common thing I hear people saying to me is “my biggest adventure is going to get groceries

Well, personally, it is still a task I do not enjoy. But that got me thinking, is there entertainment to be found while buying my monthly supplies? Are there elements I’m not seeing while I’m there?

In my twitter thread, you will become a “fly on the wall” as I set out to change the way we all see grocery shopping, forever.

You’ll find yourself asking:

  • Would I rather be watched, or watch?
  • Will my relationship survive 2020?
  • Should I drink before ubering to Costco?
  • Why can’t everyone wear their masks properly?
  • What is MY favourite cheese?

I hope you all enjoy where my strange mind takes me during these equally strange times. Please note, this story is 100% fictional and made purely for fun, suspense and to demonstrate how a good story can be told on twitter.

If you’ve enjoyed the read, I’d love it if you follow me here, as well on my twitter. Now, with much delay, here is the link to my original thread:

Soothing Election Anxieties with Fleabag

Okay, maybe I just did this because of Hot Priest

With the election looming over our heads I needed something to soothe my nerves so that I could hopefully get some sleep tonight before I have to confront the results of the American election tomorrow. So naturally, I curled up on my sofa with a blanket and a beverage and turned on one of my favourite shows, Fleabag.

If you’d like to follow along with my live tweets from this episode, click here

I chose season two, episode one of Fleabag for a variety of reasons:

  1. Familiarity

When it came to my viewing choices tonight, I wasn’t really looking for a new and engaging story to fall into. Rather, I wanted to immerse myself in a story that felt familiar to me, and was somewhat soothing. I didn’t want something intensely complex, and I knew that season two of Fleabag would, at the very least, make me laugh.

2. The Hot Priest

I am not ashamed to admit that I skipped to season two because Andrew Scott brilliantly served us looks as Hot Priest, “[the] cool sweary Priest.”

My adoration for Scott’s Hot Priest also comes from how unbelievably kind he is to Fleabag, often standing up for her when it seems like her family is content to continue bringing her down. It’s refreshing to see, especially after the season finale of season one.

To further prove my point, here is a video of Hot Priest’s best scenes

3. Martin Gets Punched

As with Hot Priest, I am not above admitting that one of the reasons I selected this episode of Fleabag is because the most reprehensible characters in the show and Claire’s husband, Martin, gets punched in the face.

Martin frequently belittles Claire, who although closed off, is an extremely capable and successful woman. Out of all of the characters in this show, I relate to Claire the most (she’s emotionally stunted, I’m emotionally stunted, she likes cold and dark places, I like cold and dark places. You get the idea.), so it was absolutely therapeutic to watch Martin get whats been coming to him since season one.

That punch will absolutely replay in my mind tonight and soothe me to sleep tonight.

Why it’s hard to follow Covid-19 social distancing measures?

After my long, frustrating, and unenjoyable trip to the grocery store today, I started to think about why people are having a hard time staying away from each other, literally.

My first reaction after entering the store was one filled with terror and fear. Terror from seeing hundreds of masked-faces inside the store, and fear from thinking about how I can protect myself from them all.

The retail store seemed like a battleground. A place from where I had to not only defeat my enemies (in this case, the crowd inside the store), but also, make it out alive (back to my car).

To label all those people as my enemies though, was something that I soon realized was a bit of an over exaggeration on my part. After all, just like me, they were also trying to make it out alive.

The trip to the grocery store today in turn made me reflect on my experience and prompted me to think about the question as to why it might be hard for everybody to socially distance themselves from others. My twitter thread dwells on some of the problematic situations one could experience firsthand on their trip to a grocery store.

Mushroom Foraging

Hi Ho Hi Ho A Mushroom Hunting We Will Go!

Autumn in the Pacific Northwest is my favourite time of year. There’s nothing quite like walking through the forest and seeing bright glowing mushrooms speckled everywhere.  It feels like Christmas morning to a forager!

The forest is a magical place to be surrounded with all its vibrant shades of green, wildlife and the sweet sounds of nature.

5 Things to Take Foraging

With our mushroom kit in hand, we set off into the magical forest on the hunt for mushrooms. For the full story, check out this Twitter thread.

  • A bottle of water
  • A knife for picking
  • An identification book – This field guide is one of our favourites
  • A navigational tool (compass, gps or pinning device)
  • A basket or a bucket
  • *bear spray optional*

Todays forage was a success! We hauled out five pounds of beautiful glowing chanterelles. Time for me to turn the fireplace on, get cosy and enjoy a warm bowl of Wild Mushroom Soup.

Every mushroom post needs a dash of fungi humour…

The trouble with Netflix

I’m sure others can relate to the endless search for the *perfect* Netflix show to binge. Follow me down the rabbit hole while I search for my next flick, all the while making tough decisions like do I honour my “will not watch without you pledge” or skip the boob tube and go to bed like a responsible adult might. Stay tuned.

All Saints Day. Sunshine.

Inspired by Gary Vaynerchuk’s exhortations to document, instead of create, I set out to capture a few hours of this day, with only a loose outcome in mind: untangling the mixed-up weirdness of a glorious unseasonably warm day, on the heels of a pandemic Halloween, and missing my dad, terribly, on this day of the dead. It was scary, and liberating, to jump into a series of Tweets with only a vague idea and my phone, while I walked around the neighbourhood!

The Office: Episode One

I have had so many friends talk about their love for The Office (the American version) and I had never seen an episode. So today, I changed that. I watched and live-tweeted the first episode and now I’m conflicted.

It starts out weird, stays weird, and ends weird and I’m not sure I get it. There’s a lot of focus on Michael Scott (obviously, Steve Carrell is top billing after all) and he’s not just a bad boss – he might be a bad person. The Jim and Pam relationship is uncomfortable. There’s just so much strangeness but it’s also weirdly compelling. I’ll probably have to keep watching at least for a bit, just to see if I can understand the hype.

Read all about it here.

A Halloween Photoshoot

As a photographer, I love capturing the unscripted, candid, natural realness of life. I’ve been shooting one family every Halloween for the past ten years and decided to live- tweet it. After waiting over an hour for them to arrive and meeting some rather interesting people along the way, I captured some great shots. Check out my Twitter feed to see how they turned out.
