Am I a helicopter dog mom?

Assignment 6: EXSM3989 Meg Berry

I wasn’t always like this…

You know, a nervous dog mom who is super paranoid about the safety of her pet. But somehow, I can rival a helicopter mom jacked up on a double-shot vanilla soy latte after spin class when it comes to the welfare of my fur child.

We grew up with big dogs like golden retrievers, Great Pyrenees, yellow labs, and Newfoundlanders so I never really worried about them. They were huge and could protect our family and themselves when needed. So, when my partner and I decided to expand our family, I thought that we would get a big dog. My partner is an avid hunter and outdoors person and so, for our lifestyle, I thought we should go to the shelter and see if we could find a big mix-breed dog that was good with kids and liked to run and be outside. But my partner had another idea. He always wanted a little chihuahua, and so one Sunday morning when I got an alert that a chihuahua pup needed to be re-homed our family went from two to three.

Roo is perfect. She is a sweet, loving little soul with a bratty personality. She is an avid walker, likes her toys and her grandma, and hates to eat all the healthy and expensive food and treats I buy for her. At Christmas one year she ate an entire bowl of sour patch kids that I left on the coffee table and has rallied through a hunger strike for more than 2.5 days when the $20 tin of dog food I tried to feed her did not suit her pallet.

I have to admit, when I first got her, I was easygoing. I kept my cool when she leaped off the local pond dock into ice water during spring breakup and my partner and I had to go in a save her (she was 4 months old), and I did not freak out when I was cleaning the shower and she jumped into a bathtub of boiling hot water at 5 months. I just put her under cold water, called my mom, got in the car, and rushed her to the emergency vet with unbelievable calm.

My anxiety over this little dog’s safety all stems from a friendly vet visit when she was 6 months old. During this visit, the vet took me aside and said to me in a very stern voice,

“DO NOT EVER TAKE HER TO A DOG PARK. IF YOU TAKE THIS DOG TO A DOG PARK SHE WILL DIE. THE OTHER DOGS WILL KILL HER. IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME WITH LITTLE DOGS. DO NOT DO IT”.

And so, I have NEVER taken little Roo to a dog park.

We drive past them every day, and they look like fun. We see the neighborhood dogs walking to the dog park through the front window every night too and they seem happy. I could never understand how they could be such little dog murder machines, but if the vet said it, it must be true, right? Poor Roo though, she just wants to go, have fun, and be included with her dog friends (or lack thereof because of me, her mean, scared mom).

So, this weekend I decided I wanted to give my fur child the opportunity to go to the dog park. This brave dog mom researched her heart out to be prepared and took Roo to the big dog park by the river for 37 minutes of incredible, horrifying fun.

During my research, I was surprised at how few websites discussed little dogs at dog parks. I was hoping to make this a how-to blog post with some trustworthy links for other dog mamas out there. I couldn’t help but wonder if I should buy anything special for our trip. Do I need a stick, a cattle prod, or should I  just get some good-kicking boots in case I need to defend my baby?  But there was no mention of these required tools.

There was really nothing out there that was super informative. Some websites talk about staying close to your dog (do not focus on your phone and lose sight they say), watching out for wildlife and do not take the dog somewhere with threats like birds and snakes, and, keeping the little dogs in the little dog area and the big dogs in the big dog area. Don’t EVER mix them they say. There was one blog that spoke quite profusely about how irritating and disrespectful it is to big dog owners when little dog owners pick their dogs up and walk past the big dogs.

We got to the river dog park, and there was no small dog area, just a big open space for all the dogs. I expected Roo to act like all other dogs on Instagram. You know, run around like crazy and have fun (something that I could video and put sound to and share for this assignment). But she didn’t, she never left my side, she stuck close and only ventured off a couple of meters from me. During our time down there, I only had one freak out. I looked up from my phone at one point and Roo was nowhere to be seen, but then I realized that she was just right behind me, walking less than 3 inches from my feet.  I just couldn’t see her because I was taking pictures with my phone.

Her little face and mine were both full of worry during the trip, but I knew she felt wild and alive because she was finally at the dog park.  I felt wild and alive! She sniffed every blade of grass and played for a couple of minutes on the rocks by the river.  There were only a few other dogs at the dog park; a Rottweiler, a pit bull, shepherds, and a dumb doodle that would not stop jumping on me when I walked past holding Roo. His owners suggested I put her down so they could play. I graciously said, “No thank you” thinking that I didn’t want my baby trampled to death.

The dog park was stunning, a great place to bring Roo and let her play. It’s a special place with a beautiful landscape and is a wildlife sanctuary for rattlesnakes.

Roo and I both slept well last night. Probably from both the stress and excitement. I am proud of both of us though and I feel that if I can be this good of a dog mom to my little golden Roo, and not be a helicopter mom I do not understand why parents say it’s hard with human children.

Roo and I are going to visit another dog park in the town beside us next week. It apparently is right next to the “Birds of Prey” center which is a  refuge for eagles, hawks, and falcons and should be lovely.

Easter Family Fun at YMM

On March 26, YMM hosted its second annual Family Easter Fun event, in support of the United Way Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo.

Six hundred children attended during the afternoon time slots. Each hour, a new group of children came out to YMM for Easter fun! Children would first select their favourite Easter basket from the baggage carousel, then make their way down the Easter bunny trail to enjoy activity and craft stations. The fun included cookie decorating, bunny racing, egg decorating and games at the carrot patch. The highlight for most was being greeted by the Easter Bunny once his flight arrived from Bunny Island.

All funds raised through the event will support important programs and services offered through United Way Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo member agencies.

YMM’s airport campus and community partners were eager to support the event, through in-kind and monetary sponsorships to enhance the event and funds raised for the United Way.

Team YMM is thrilled with the results of the event – Over 1,500 community members had a great time and over $2,000 was raised for the United Way!

Flush with Excitement: The Story of My Bathroom Renovation

Hey there, DIY enthusiasts! Jill MacDonald here and I’m thrilled to share my latest renovation project with you. This time, I tackled the downstairs bathroom, and boy was it a ride! From measuring twice and cutting once to hammering out the details, I’ve got all the puns and dusty details to share.

At the beginning of this course, I shared the process of hanging a mirror in my main floor bathroom on Twitter. I casually mentioned I was on a HGTV show called “Home to Win” in 2016 and figured this would be the opportunity to elaborate on that experience and how it helped me with the renovation.

I landed on the show after submitting an overly emotional video a few days after being evacuated due to the Horse River wildfire. Never in a million years did I expect to be selected and the experience was certainly full of highs and lows. I was hoping I could share my video summary package but alas, it’s been removed. This show promo will have to do.

I’d like to think that my experience on Home to Win has helped me in more ways than just getting better at home improvement tasks. I learned how to work under pressure and how to make quick decisions when things don’t go as planned. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned from renovating my own home; things NEVER go according to plan. Check out the full episode on Prime (S1, E10) to see how things panned out.

Now onto the renovation at hand. The downstairs bathroom. *insert dark ominous tones* DUH-DUH-DUHHHH

First things first, I knew this bathroom needed a facelift. It was just begging for some TLC, and I was more than happy to oblige. So, I put on my tool belt, grabbed my measuring tape, and got to work. I knew this was going to be a long journey, but I was ready to plunge in! The first step, of course, was coming up with a plan. I put my creative mind to work, brainstorming ways to make this bathroom pop. When I finally had a vision, it was time to source all the materials.

I picked out a beautiful wallpaper for an accent wall, a paint color for the vanity, and some funky accessories to help with storage. I couldn’t wait to see how it would all come together. Once I was happy with my direction, it was time to flush the old and welcome in the new. After I cleared everything out of the bathroom it was time to get to work.

First step was to get rid of the sad brown colour. I’m sorry but who would EVER paint their bathroom BROWN? I mean… I know what we all do in there but that’s a little on the nose don’t you think?

After letting the beautiful white walls dry it was finally WALLPAPER TIME! Thankfully my sister is an expert in this area and offered to give me a hand. Knowing that a busy pattern would require WAY more brain power than I was willing to spend on this project, I opted for one that was going to be easy to line up. #winning

Two sets of hands meant this part of the project went quickly. I can’t stress that enough! If you plan on hanging drywall, go for an easy pattern, one that is pasted or unpasted and use glue. Peel and stick wallpaper is a NIGHTMARE. If you’ve ever tried to hang it, you’ll understand. The bubbles are so difficult to get out and although you can peel it back and readjust, it’s just not easy to work with.

Once the wallpaper was up it was time to refinish the vanity. Since the wallpaper was a darker grey, I wanted to paint the vanity white so it would pop next to the wall. Three coats of high coverage cabinet paint and we’re starting to get somewhere!

Once the paint had dried and the cabinet doors were re-installed it was time to mount the new vanity and facet. Oh husband? I have a job for you! Goodbye 1980’s vanity top! Not that the 80’s were ALL bad. I mean I graced this planet in 1983 so…

The final large project I had to tackle was caulking and painting the mouldings. This unfortunately is where I ran into problems. The Caulking fiasco can be viewed in all it’s glory HERE . An entire tube of caulking wasted, but we finally got back on track and finished up the space.

At this point I can finally start the finishing touches!

I’m ‘flush’ with happiness now that my bathroom renovation is finished! All in all, this renovation project was a success. I’ve proven that with a little hard work, a dash of creativity, and a healthy dose of humour, any project can turn out beautifully. So, to all you DIY enthusiasts out there, keep hammering away and remember to always measure twice and cut once – it’s a nail-biting experience, but the end result is worth it.

Importance of literature

Literature is key to the preservation and retelling of story’s. Without it people wouldn’t be able to carry emotions over generations. Literature holds much power and conveys the generational values of our predecessors.

I resonate deeply with many story’s I’ve heard and read. Personally I receive deeper meaning behind reading a book in my hands. Maybe that’s just because I’m a nerd but reading online doesn’t feel as authentic as holding a story in the palm of your hands.

Maybe try creating story’s of your own you never know when you could cultivate an audience with values you both share.

Everyone has a different way of taking in information and we all have our preferences when doing so. The important part is that you find a way you love to connect with story’s and stick with it.

How my wife became a mugger…

and sucked me into the lifestyle..

It all started on March 15, 2013. My wife was in New York City, and she became a mugger. An international Mugger.

Since then some of the people involved in these muggings were:

Martin from New Castle, UK

Claudia from Frankfurt, Germany

Ryan from Maryland, USA

Matt from Sydney, Australia

Hiep Vu from Anaheim, USA

Detlef from Hanover, Germany

Fanis from Moschato, Greece

Malini from London, UK

Countless friends and family..

Ok, ok hear me out.. While she was in New York City my wife bought her first You Are Here collection mug from Starbucks.

The fun thing about these mugs is that there are roughly 500 mugs around the world representing cities and countries.

The only way to get these mugs are to go to that city and buy one, harass your friends and family who are visiting those places to bring them back for you, trade for them in the Starbucks Muggers Facebook group (like with all the people I mentioned above), or buy them on eBay.

As you just read you found out why I called her a mugger.

Just before my wife and I got married I was sorting through some stuff at her apartment and she has a very colorful rug. It has many colors that are on the insides of the mugs, which have rotating colors depending on the mug.

So I looked at the rug, looked at the mugs, and decided to make some art! I color matched the mugs and colors and took a picture. That picture is the reason why I am in this class right now.

On my Instagram page I threw out a little video of our mug cabinet and some mugs on it if you’d like to see it…

I posted that picture on Instagram and saw the others that were posting about them. I decided to make an Instagram page for our mugs! I posted a ton of them and it stated my interest in social media pages and how they worked.

Social Media

I find it funny that this is how I got into social media leading me into starting pages, managing pages, learning on my own, and now doing the certificate program. Sometimes things need to come together in a way that speaks to you. Sometimes things come together in a way that makes it FUN for you.

The mugger community page on Facebook is fun and we have made a lot of friends and connected and traded with a ton of people. Most notably with Martin from New Castle who agreed to trade with me even though I asked him if I could send 4 mugs by boat from Eastern Canada to him in the UK because it cost $60 less! He agreed and it took….13 weeks to get to him! What a fun story.

You’ve now learned about the strange and fun world of muggers! You never know what could be the thing to lead you into new passions. We need to keep an eye out even if it’s with a rug and a mug.

Reflections

I am a mirror, and I have seen it all. From the happiest moments to the darkest ones, I have reflected them all. But the thing that haunts me the most is the sadness I have seen in the eyes of the people who stare at me. I am just a piece of glass, but they seem to look at me as if I hold all the answers to their problems.

Today, a young girl came in, and she seemed lost. Her eyes were red, and tears were streaming down her face. She looked at me with a broken gaze, and I reflected back the pain I saw in her eyes. It was clear that she was struggling with mental health issues, and it made me feel helpless.

It is not just her, though. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1 in 4 people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. That’s a staggering number, and it’s disheartening to see that so many people are struggling to cope with their mental health.

As I watch people come and go, I wish I could do something to help them. But I am just a mirror, and I can only reflect what I see. I can bear witness to their struggles, but I can’t change anything. The truth is, we need to take action to support those who are dealing with mental health issues.

Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders, affecting over 264 million people worldwide. It’s a debilitating illness that can affect every aspect of a person’s life, including their work, relationships, and physical health. But the good news is that depression is treatable, and early detection can make a huge difference. As the famous psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung once said,

“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”

One of the keys to recognizing the early signs of depression is to pay attention to your own thoughts and feelings. Depression often starts with feelings of sadness or hopelessness, but it can also manifest as irritability, anger, or frustration. Other signs of depression may include changes in appetite or sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and a loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable.

A twitter thread discusses a simple self-driven approach to help conquer these hidden monsters, because we can’t wait to be saved, can we? If I could, I would tell all those catching their glimpse in me to take matters into their own hands before I shatter under the weight of their pain.

Self-care is one of the most important things that people can do for their mental wellness. Self-care is all about taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally. It’s about recognizing your own needs and taking steps to meet them. Self-care can take many forms, such as exercise, healthy eating, meditation, spending time with loved ones, and pursuing hobbies and interests. Let me share an infographic here to help drive the point home.

Another way to help is to practice mindfulness. This involves paying attention to our thoughts and feelings without judgment, and learning to let go of negative thoughts that can contribute to depression. Mindfulness practices such as meditation and deep breathing can help us develop a sense of inner peace and calm.

Lastly, it’s important to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you’re struggling with depression, don’t be afraid to reach out to a mental health professional for support. They can provide you with the tools and resources you need to overcome your depression and live a fulfilling life.

Just like the weather, life has its different seasons. Sometimes it’s bright and sunny, and other times it’s dark and gloomy. Depression can feel like a never-ending storm, but just like we take an umbrella to keep the rain away, we can take steps to care for our mental health during the tough times. Maybe it’s talking to a therapist, taking a mental health day, or practicing self-care activities like exercise or meditation. Whatever it may be, remember that it’s okay to seek help and take care of yourself. Just like the seasons, life will change and brighter days will come. Keep holding on, and remember that you’re not alone.

P. S. As a mirror, I can only reflect and these reflections can be daunting sometimes. If you’re looking for a quick and fun way to incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine, check out this video on Instagram! It has some simple steps with a dash of humour to help you unwind after this deep dive into reality. Here’s the link: Mind… It Matters! Let me know in the comments what you think!

Matilda: A Childhood Classic

One of my favourite movies as a child was Matilda. A film adaptation of the original novel by Roald Dahl, the 1996 film is about a gifted child who endures living with self-centered parents and an indubitably mean principle. Using her telekinesis powers, she is able to defend herself from her parents. She also uses her powers to protect her classmates and teacher from the bully of a principle. In the end, Matilda is saved by her sweet teacher and no longer has to live in an unloving household.

The fantasy-comedy film follows the story spine learned in the first module of the Digital Storytelling course. Matilda reads her books, stays in her room everyday, until she practices her telekinesis powers. Because of that, she is able to get back at her parents. And because of her telekinesis powers, she is able to use them to ward off the principal until finally Ms. Trenchbull resigns from the school and moves away for good. And ever since then, Matilda’s life has been better.

This movie has stuck with me throughout my life not only because of Mara Wilson’s (Matilda) great acting, but because the story follows the 4 I’s. The story is interesting, instructing, involving and inspiring.

The story of Matilda is interesting. Maybe not the overused horrible parents with an exceptionally smart child plot line, but the fact that Matilda had telekinesis powers. Matilda uses her powers against the principal who unjustly punishes students, and stands up to her parents. She teaches us that we can face our ‘bully’ or our obstacles in life – no matter how large.

We see life from Matilda’s eyes, how she is poorly treated at home, how her teacher is bullied by the principal Trenchbull and students are traumatized by abuse from the principal.  This compels us to side with Matilda and see why she needs to stick up for herself, her classmates and her teacher.

The plot not only involves us and relates us to think back to our own childhood and early years of learning, but also inspires us to think about our own lives and what we can overcome.

Rumoured Harry Potter Series

Ok, maybe you’re not a fan of Harry Potter, but for those of us who are there is a pretty exciting rumour going around.

Harry Potter might be getting a TV series! First announced by Bloomberg on April 3,2023 and then appearing on other news sites like yahoo and The National News. What do we know so far?

The rumour comes from two anonymous sources that believe the deal is close to being closed. J.K. Rowling, who wrote the book series in the talks to be creatively involved as a producer. They are wanting to stay true to the original story and characters while adding more details along the way.

We’re told that each of the seven books would have its own season in the series. Since some of the books are over 500 pages long – there’s a lot of important details that were cut out of the movies.

With the success of the the eight films (book seven had was released in two parts), it’s likely that this project will become a reality. The eight films generated a knock-out total of over 7.7 billion dollars world wide in ticket sales.

I hope this happens. I would love to see the magical wizarding world of Harry Potter reopened.

Springtime Shenanigans: Cats Going Outside for the First Time and the Mischief They Find

Spring is a wonderful time of year for many reasons, but for cats, it’s an especially exciting time. As the weather starts to warm up, our feline friends start to become more active and curious, and many of them will be eager to explore the great outdoors for the first time.

For cats that have been indoor pets their entire lives, going outside for the first time can be a thrilling experience. They’ll be able to feel the sun on their fur, smell the fresh spring air, and hear all of the sounds of the outdoors that they’ve only ever heard through a window before.

But with all of this newfound freedom comes the potential for mischief. Cats are notoriously curious creatures, and when they’re let loose outside for the first time, they can get into all sorts of trouble. One of the most common things that cats do when they go outside for the first time is to start exploring their neighborhood.

Many cats will quickly discover that they’re not the only feline in the area. They may hear other cats calling out to each other, and they’ll be naturally drawn to investigate. Before long, they may find themselves at a neighborhood cat meeting, where they’ll meet other cats from the area and exchange stories and gossip.

Of course, these meetings can lead to all sorts of mischief. Cats are notorious for their playful and mischievous nature, and when they get together in a group, they can become even more daring and adventurous. They may play pranks on each other, explore new areas of the neighborhood, or even get into fights over territory or resources.

While these meetings can be a lot of fun for our feline friends, it’s important for pet owners to keep a close eye on their cats when they’re outside. Cats can get into all sorts of trouble when they’re left unsupervised, from climbing trees to getting into fights with other animals. It’s important to make sure that your cat is safe and secure when they’re outside, and to keep an eye on them at all times.

Prince Cat in Spring

One such cat is Prince. As the season changes and the flowers begin to bloom, Prince Cat awakens from his winter slumber to discover the wonders of spring. He is a certain member of the neighbourhood cats association.

In conclusion, spring is an exciting time for cats, especially those that are venturing outside for the first time. While they may get into some mischief, such as attending neighborhood cat meetings, it’s important to keep a close eye on them to ensure their safety. With proper supervision and care, our feline friends can enjoy all of the wonders of the great outdoors while staying safe and happy.
