With the election looming over our heads I needed something to soothe my nerves so that I could hopefully get some sleep tonight before I have to confront the results of the American election tomorrow. So naturally, I curled up on my sofa with a blanket and a beverage and turned on one of my favourite shows, Fleabag.

I chose season two, episode one of Fleabag for a variety of reasons:

1. Familiarity

When it came to my viewing choices tonight, I wasn’t really looking for a new and engaging story to fall into. Rather, I wanted to immerse myself in a story that felt familiar to me, and was somewhat soothing. I didn’t want something intensely complex, and I knew that season two of Fleabag would, at the very least, make me laugh.

2. The Hot Priest

I am not ashamed to admit that I skipped to season two because Andrew Scott brilliantly served us looks as Hot Priest, “[the] cool sweary Priest.”

My adoration for Scott’s Hot Priest also comes from how unbelievably kind he is to Fleabag, often standing up for her when it seems like her family is content to continue bringing her down. It’s refreshing to see, especially after the season finale of season one.

3. Martin Gets Punched

As with Hot Priest, I am not above admitting that one of the reasons I selected this episode of Fleabag is because the most reprehensible characters in the show and Claire’s husband, Martin, gets punched in the face.

Martin frequently belittles Claire, who although closed off, is an extremely capable and successful woman. Out of all of the characters in this show, I relate to Claire the most (she’s emotionally stunted, I’m emotionally stunted, she likes cold and dark places, I like cold and dark places. You get the idea.), so it was absolutely therapeutic to watch Martin get whats been coming to him since season one.

That punch will absolutely replay in my mind tonight and soothe me to sleep tonight.

After my long, frustrating, and unenjoyable trip to the grocery store today, I started to think about why people are having a hard time staying away from each other, literally.

My first reaction after entering the store was one filled with terror and fear. Terror from seeing hundreds of masked-faces inside the store, and fear from thinking about how I can protect myself from them all.

The retail store seemed like a battleground. A place from where I had to not only defeat my enemies (in this case, the crowd inside the store), but also, make it out alive (back to my car).

To label all those people as my enemies though, was something that I soon realized was a bit of an over exaggeration on my part. After all, just like me, they were also trying to make it out alive.

The trip to the grocery store today in turn made me reflect on my experience and prompted me to think about the question as to why it might be hard for everybody to socially distance themselves from others. My twitter thread dwells on some of the problematic situations one could experience firsthand on their trip to a grocery store.

I’m sure others can relate to the endless search for the *perfect* Netflix show to binge. Follow me down the rabbit hole while I search for my next flick, all the while making tough decisions like do I honour my “will not watch without you pledge” or skip the boob tube and go to bed like a responsible adult might. Inspired by Gary Vaynerchuk’s exhortations to document, instead of create, I set out to capture a few hours of this day, with only a loose outcome in mind: untangling the mixed-up weirdness of a glorious unseasonably warm day, on the heels of a pandemic Halloween, and missing my dad, terribly, on this day of the dead. It was scary, and liberating, to jump into a series of Tweets with only a vague idea and my phone, while I walked around the neighbourhood!

I have had so many friends talk about their love for The Office (the American version) and I had never seen an episode. So today, I changed that. I watched and live-tweeted the first episode and now I’m conflicted.

It starts out weird, stays weird, and ends weird and I’m not sure I get it. There’s a lot of focus on Michael Scott (obviously, Steve Carrell is top billing after all) and he’s not just a bad boss – he might be a bad person. The Jim and Pam relationship is uncomfortable. There’s just so much strangeness but it’s also weirdly compelling. I’ll probably have to keep watching at least for a bit, just to see if I can understand the hype.

With my obnoxious sweet tooth and sad, single plastic bag of decorations, things were not looking good as I readied my house to stare down the ravenous little Trick or Treaters.
