Making Friends as Adults

New friends on new trail!

Three years ago, I embarked on a journey that turned out to be so much more than just building trails. You know, I’m the kind of person who’s easygoing yet a bit shy, maybe even a touch stand-offish. Adventure has always been my calling, and I have a deep desire in me to hike the Great Divide Trail end to end, a dream that not many of my existing friends share. So, I had this idea – why not meet people who share my passion?

Hanging out, after a hard day trailbuilding!

I signed up to volunteer on a trail-building crew on the Great Divide Trail. The rugged wilderness, the thrill of creating something that people would use to explore nature – it all resonated deeply with me. I set off, both excited and a bit nervous, not knowing what to expect.

As I arrived at the campsite, I remember feeling that mix of anxiety and anticipation. Little did I know that experience would change my life. That’s where I met someone who had just moved to town, someone who was as enthusiastic about hiking and thru-hiking as I was. Our shared interest was like an instant connection, a kind of unspoken understanding that adventure was in our blood.

Building trail….

We got to talking during breaks from trail building. I remember feeling surprised by how easily the conversation flowed. This person was genuinely interested in the same things I was, and there was this mutual respect for nature, for the trails, and for each other’s journey.

Our days were filled with sweat, laughter, and stories. As we worked side by side, I realized that breaking the ice wasn’t so hard when you’re united by a common purpose. That initial exchange of numbers felt like a small step, but it led to a series of adventures I could never have imagined.

Fast forward to today, and that chance meeting has transformed into a deep and genuine friendship. We’ve hiked trails, explored new places, and shared countless moments of awe at nature’s beauty. The Great Divide Trail that brought us together was the perfect metaphor for our friendship – challenging, breathtaking, and full of surprises.

WE are smiling, but this was type 2 fun all the way!

Through the ups and downs of trails, the laughter around campfires, and the quiet moments of introspection on mountain summits, I’ve come to realize that friendships as adults can be just as magical as those formed in childhood. It’s about finding someone who not only shares your interests but also inspires you to push your boundaries and grow.

The trail that made us friends!!

So, here I am, looking back at that decision to volunteer on a trail crew with gratitude. Not only did I contribute to something meaningful, but I also found a friend who shares my love for adventure and the great outdoors. It’s proof that sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to the most beautiful connections.

A car salesman with no cars.

Over the past week, I have been trying to buy a new car. This story actually goes back much further – like a year ago when I first started my search. It has now become a pressing issue. I guess the car industry is still playing catch up after the pandemic so this is my live tweet on my recent experience of trying to buy a car when there are no cars to buy.

” The non-refundable deposit is for all my hard work I have done over the past week” Car salesman

Using the story arc:

1. Stasis-Everyday Life

Need a new car, don’t really want to buy a new car. Leave it until the last possible moment.

2. Trigger-Event outside the control of the protagonist (Can be positive or negative)

Limited turbo engine vehicles available to buy, no real negotiation happening.

3. Quest-Rising Action (Result of the trigger)

Get what you can take.

4. Surprises-Unexpected Events (+ve or -ve) (Commonly Challenges) (Don’t let protagonist complete his/her Quest)

Stressful car salesman tactics.

5. Critical Choice-Decision is key to the Story, Reveals the protagonist’s true character.

Fills out the paperwork to buy the car.

6. Climax-Decision leads to the climax, highest level of tension for reader.

8.49% interest rate!

7. Reversal-Outcome of the Critical Choice and the Climax, results in changes for the characters, should be logical and based on the events leading up to it

Leaves the dealership. Still looking for a new vehicle.

8. Resolution-Protagonist reaches a new stasis, characters should have evolved learning important life lessons through their experiences.

Entergalactic: an animated love story

The movie Entergalactic balances storytelling with visuals and a soundtrack that could have easily taken over had the story not been so strong.

The story follows the key storytelling guidance similar to Pixar’s 6 Rules of storytelling Pixar’s 6 rules of storytelling and hits the mark for “Great stories are universal”. The love story between the two main characters is very natural and real, built organically through chance meetings.

The story spine can also be found intact in this film:

Once upon a time there was an artist that has recently moved into a swanky apartment in Manhattan after being hired by Cosmic Comics to turn his original character into a comic book series.

Every day the artist grapples with his newfound success and the everyday life of friends, ex-girlfriends, and the general excitement of the city.

One day he bumps into his neighbour while she is playing loud music during a party at her apartment while he is trying to sleep and experiences love at first sight.

Because of that he struggles to balance these feelings of love with trying to stay focused on a successful life that doesn’t seem to have time for romance.

Because of that he has a hard time expressing his true love for his neighbour which allows a misunderstanding to grow into the pair parting ways.

Until finally friends and family force the two to realize that they are truly in love and it is worth the effort. A quote from the main characters sister sums it up perfectly. “Love is the easiest thing in the world when it happens by accident, but it doesn’t get real until you do it on purpose.”

The movie uses strong visuals and an amazing soundtrack that support the story, with a flowing animation style and “As a sort of psychedelic outgrowth of a studio album, Entergalactic hits its marks. quoted in this review Craig Jenkins New York Magazine / Vulture

As Ashley Fell discusses in her Tedx talk we are living in an era of message saturation and digital disruption, it can be difficult to cut through the noise and capture attention and make our voice heard. The soundtrack and animation in Entergalactic sets this romantic comedy apart from the classic romantic comedies. The visuals create interest and involve the watcher in the art, the story instructed us by immersing the viewer in the day-to-day life of the main character and his struggles all on a backdrop of the animated cityscape that added depth. The story also inspired the viewer with a true love story that was real and relatable. No rich businessman falling in love with a prostitute, no million dollar pay out for a night with one’s wife, no emails written by sons of widowed fathers just chance encounters, romantic connection and the daily realities of modern life.

In the book by Scott Meslow called From Hollywood with Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy the author writes “There is something just fundamentally pleasing and satisfying about the arc of love. It’s a story that many, many people can relate to in one way or another. It’s enjoyable to watch people spar and banter and fight about what they really want. And when they come together, I mean, that’s as satisfying as it gets,”

This movie artfully adds visuals and soundtrack to elevate this romantic comedy above the standard Rom-Com fare.
