Creating a Video Story

Videos are a great way to tell a story. With unlimited combinations of graphics, text, video clips, photos, and audio, videos really give users the creative freedom to show a story in every way possible. But how do you create a video anyways? Below I include how I created a movie trailer (you can check it out on Twitter here), however these techniques can be used for any video you are looking to make. Let’s dive in!

First, what platform should you use to make your video? There is really no right answer to this, as different tools all have their own functions that could benefit users in different ways. However, my favourite is Canva. It is a super easy and simple tool to get started in design, including video making. What is great about it is that it’s free, and includes lots of great free graphics, photos, video, and more that you can use! I loved it so much that I even bought the premium version for $150/year (note this may have changed), which gives access to additional features such as easy resizing and even more graphics and footage.

Once you have gone to canva.com, you’ll notice the giant “create a design” button in the top right corner. Click this and choose/search for your creation format (in this case I chose video).

Next you’ll be given a blank video screen. Although I won’t be going through every single feature here, I’m going to highlight a few of the main ones that will allow you to create a video. Likely, you will want to upload some of your own videos, graphics, photos, or music. This can be done with the upload tab on the left hand side. Click “upload media” to chose your file, or drag and drop it in. You can then click on the added media to place it on your video screen.

You may want to add some text into your video too, which can be done with the “text” tab. I find it easiest to click “add a heading”, which will add some text to your screen. Then, I adjust the font, colour, and size by clicking on the text, causing these features to appear at the top of the screen.

But what if you don’t have graphics/videos/photos/etc. to add and you need some? This is where the amazing “elements” feature comes in. Here you can search for footage, graphics, shapes, frames, and more! Canva is nice as it doesn’t trick you into paying for anything, making it clear which features cost money by placing the premium logo on them.

Another great place to look for free images and video is Pixabay, a stock photos website with a decent amount of free content. I used Pixabay to search for video clips as well, although most of mine came from Canva.

What about music though? Unfortunately, Canva doesn’t supply free sound, but you can access a bunch on Upbeat, a sound service with many unique tracks! One handy feature they have is allowing you to favourite songs. This lets you easily browse for music, save the ones you like, and compare them later!

My last video tip is to experiment with animating your images and text, as well as including transitions between your scenes. This really helps the flow of the piece, and can make it more dynamic and less jarring when scenes switch. You’ll notice the “animate feature” on the top of the screen (if it isn’t there try clicking on an element first, such as text or an image). This allows you to adjust how images/graphics/text/etc. appear and disappear. The transition button is the tiny plus sign in-between scenes at the bottom of the page (they look like infinity loops once the transition is added). Once it is clicked you will notice a variety of different transition options to play with! I used fade for my video clips.

And those are my simple tips on how to make a video! I hope you enjoyed and be sure to check out my creation on Twitter to see just what is possible with these few simple tools!

Storytelling Tips

Storytelling, whether for a book, movie, or social media post, is an exciting and creative process. In the business and marketing world, storytelling is a wonderful way to engage your readers, viewers, and potential customers. By telling a story, the audience can view themselves within it. It lets you show your product, explain benefits, and focus on your customer without screaming “buy this”! But, it is far from easy. Below I’ve included a few of my favourite tips we learned to help storytellers along their journey!

Tweeting my Homework Misadventure

Summary

Over the course of a day I worked to document my panic-filled adventure of trying to complete all of my homework on time for my seven classes. At first I really struggled to focus on my readings, before spacing out entirely and ripping out my hair aimlessly. I switched over to work on my assignments instead and was able to finish two of them before eating breakfast and falling asleep (I started my adventure around midnight on Sunday morning). Later in the morning I struggle to accomplish much before having lunch and then a nap. After that I try to begin my analytics homework but am completely stuck, and panicking as time passes. Finally, I figure out the assignment and get everything I need to submitted in time.

Storytelling Principles

My Twitter story uses a variety of storytelling principles to keep readers engaged. Firstly, my story has a clear beginning, middle, and end. It begins as I start my day, the middle is where I panic over my struggle to complete my homework, and it ends with me finishing my work. This story is also quite universal, as many people can relate to having to do either homework or something else in a short period of time. We learned in class that good stories have someone to root for, which in this case (I would hope), is myself as I race against the clock to get everything done. The story is also simple, focusing only on how my homework is going, and ignoring distracting and unrelated elements. Colour, picture, and movement are additional elements that can help bring a story to life, which I was able to create through my use of silly gifs. Due to the stakes I was facing and the suspense of not knowing if I would finish on time, I hoped to keep readers interested in this piece on my daily life.

Because of my humor, suspense, and use of story elements I think I was able to create a compelling Twitter thread! Feel free to read it!

Mulan: A Timeless Classic

One of my favourite movies of all time is Mulan, the 1998 animated classic.

This story follows the story spine perfectly, making it a clear and concise tale:

  • Once upon a time there was a girl named Mulan who was afraid of disappointing her parents.
  • Everyday she struggled to fit in the role she was meant to play in society.
  • But one day her father was called to war, and she took his place instead.
  • Because of that she joined the army as a man.
  • Because of that she was discovered and told to go home.
  • Because of that she became determined to save China and her friends.
  • Until finally she protected the emperor from his attackers.
  • And ever since then she was seen as a hero, by both her family and her country.

As you can see, Mulan fits the story structure, having a beginning, middle, and end. Another reason this story is so well enjoyed is because it sticks to some of the fundamental rules of storytelling. Firstly, it’s universal. It is a story about a girl struggling to fit in to her world, wanting to please her parents, and deciding to help others- themes that most people can relate to. As well, the story gives you someone to root for, to care about. The audience sympathizes with Mulan’s struggle and wants her to succeed and save the day. The story is also simple and focused, it doesn’t drift away from our main character or over complicate the themes by adding too many subplots and extra characters. It works to engage the audience through its stunning graphics, catchy songs, funny jokes, unique characters, and action filled plot. Just like Ashley Fell mentioned in her TED Talk on powerful storytelling, the story includes colour, picture, and movement which grab our attention.

Another area of the story that really brings it to life is that the characters are given opinions, as mentioned in by Cyiaque Lamar in the article “22 Rules of Storytelling According to Pixar”. This is best seen in the musical number “A Girl Worth Fighting For”, where the different characters express what kind of women they like, all having their own fantasies of what the perfect girl would be. One of the rules mentions that the character should be admired for trying more than for their success. This is very true in Mulan’s story. She fails many times, messing up her meeting with the matchmaker, struggling to train for the army, etc. But through hard work she eventually succeeds. These aspects make her character more relatable to the audience, as we admire her imperfections, courage, and effort.

One of these 22 rules also mentions that coincidences should get your characters in trouble, not out of trouble. This happens in the story when Mulan is injured in battle, coincidently on her chest, meaning the doctor discovers that she is a woman. Lamar also reminds us that stakes are an important part of storytelling. The movie is full of high stakes for the main character. First, she has to make her family proud with the matchmaking meeting, then there is the high stake of trying to not be discovered as a woman, then there are the stakes of war and if she and her friends will survive, as well as the stakes of saving the emperor. The movie’s stakes get more and more intense over time, until Mulan’s actions lead to saving her own country!

Overall Mulan is a relatable, universal, inspiring, and action-packed tale that has still excites viewers like myself today, no matter how many times I watch it! It follows many story rules and points that allow it to hold its ground as timeless classic.
